Family Reunion September 6, 1888

One of the pleasant events of the season was the birthday surprise of John Lilley and wife, of Byhalia, Union County, Ohio, August 11th, 1888. Mr. Lilley was at his barn, which is some distance from the house, making some repairs, when about one hundred drove up to his pleasant home. When the children of this kind and devoted father saw him coming to the house, his face wet with perspiration and his clothes somewhat soiled, the query was, "Is he surprised?" But without a single sign of surprise or excitement he walked boldly forward in his own simple manner, bade everyone welcome and went on into the well filled parlor where a face met him that was not familiar, but after looking and reflecting for a few moments, he recognized a resemblance of his uncle, Rev. N. O. Greer, D.D. of Brandywine, PA, who had died several years ago, and thought this lady must be a daughter and when he realized he was standing facing a cousin whom he had not seen for forty years, he acknowledged all was to him a surprise, but Mrs. Neely's presence the greater one. It was also a family reunion, as all the children and grandchildren were present. Mr. and Mrs. Lilley have ten children, four boys and six girls, four of the girls being married, and were present with their husbands and children. Those present from a distance were their oldest daughter, Mrs. J. T. Thompson and husband, of Lynchburg, Highland County, O., Mr. J. H. Thompson, of Dodeonville, O., Mrs. Laura B. Parker, widow of the deceased Lawyer Parker, of Lynchburg, Ohio and Mrs. Agnes G. Neely, of Findlay, Ohio and quite a number from Kenton. The dinner was elegant to say the least and highly appreciated by all. The presents were both useful and ornamental, and as they were too numerous to mention. The presentation address was made by Mr. Martin Johnston, of Byhalia, he being the oldest gentleman present. His remarks were encircled by a golden chain and touched quite tenderly all who were present, after which all united in wishing Mr. and Mrs. Lilley many happy birthdays, and as the shadows of evening were gathering, all returned to their homes.
