Jake Diebold Laid to Eternal
Rest on Sunday
At the Edwards funeral parlors on Sunday afternoon, December 7, the funeral service for
the late John Jacob Diebold, under the auspices of the Yukon Order of Pioneers, was
conducted by the Rev. W. B. McIntosh of the United Church of Canada.
The large attendance of the Pioneers in full regalia, and others, filled the chapel to
capacity.
The minister spoke on the subject, "Looking at Death Through Christ." The hymns,
"Rock of Ages" and "Nearer My God to Thee" were sung. Miss Mary Bella
Spence accompanying at the organ.
At the graveside in the Pioneer Cemetery, after the simple commitment by the minister, the
Pioneers conducted their symbolic and very impressive service, the wording of which
certainly does great credit to the order, and to the facts of experience.
The sudden passing of our brother Diebold is another reminder to all of the brevity and
uncertainty of this life. The large number in attendance at his funeral was a worthy mark
of respect for a very likeable man.
The beautiful floral offerings on the casket were from the Holbrook Dredge Company. W. D.
McLeod and Myers Samuelson.
Pall-bearers were: W. D. McLeod, S. Holmes, J. Fletcher, Pete Lenez, G. W. LeBlanc, J.

DEATH OF JOHN DIEBOLD
One of Marion's Most Valuable and Enterprising Citizens --- "He Has Gone and We Will Miss Him."
John Diebold, proprietor of the National House, this city, who departed this life yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, was one of our most industrious, active and enterprising citizens. He leaves a kind wife, a dutiful son, three loving daughters and many kind friends to mourn his departure.
Deceased was born in Ellmendingen, Pfordsheim Baden, December 7th, 1829; he was married to Margaret May, May 1st, 1852, and in June 1854 they, in company with their parents and others to the number of thirty two, came to this country. He came straight to Marion, and has ever since resided here. During his life in Marion, he has done much, even more than his share to build up and improve the interests of our little city; his whole sole and ambition was to do good in the way of enterprise; he was the poor man's friend, always ready to extend a helping hand; he was a member of the Council, and was always on hand to do duty financially, when necessary, he said, "my money was made here and here I will spend it." He will be missed by all his friends, of which there are no small number.
Mr. Diebold was on the streets last Saturday evening, appearing in the best of health, and Sunday morning he was attending to his duties until about 9'oclock, when he complained of not being well. On Monday, Dr. Sweney was called and pronounced the disease typhoid fever. He remained sick three and a half days when death relieved him.
The funeral will take place tomorrow from the National House at 2 o'clock p.m. Rev. Reif will officiate in the German language, and Rev. S. D. Bates in the English. The remains will be placed in the cemetery vault.

A Peep Into the Business Port in Our City
Going north on the east side of East street we come to the National House, kept by mine hoste John Diebold. This place is large and extensive; the hotel is three stories high, with a fine mansard roof, and under this hotel are splendid wine cellars. On the lot are ice houses, fountains of living water put in action by forced wind pumps, summer gardens, fine walks, lawns dotted with shade and fruit trees, fine plants, shrubbery, etc.; feed and sale barns, acres that produce fine vegetables in their season, and in fact, everything in and about the place arranged the most convenient. This is now the great key to an immense fortune, and Mr. Diebold is just the enterprising man to work it out.

Marriage Article for Rosa
Diebold to William Shoemaker
from the "Marion Daily Star" Newspaper
Thursday, May 2, 1878
LAST NIGHT'S
-----------------
HYMENIAL FESTIVITY.
-----------------
Cupid's Latest Achievement.
-----------------
"Two souls with but a single
thought,
Two hearts that beat as one."
The happy event of last evening has absorbed the minds of our citizens for several days, and as our readers are aware, was nothing less than the marriage of William Shoemaker, one of our Capital city's enterprising you men, to one of Marion's fair damsels, Miss Rosa Diebold, the accomplished daughter of mine host John Diebold, proprietor of the National House.
At a very early hour the guests began to arrive, and by half- past eight o'clock the handsome and commodious parlors were thronged, and the spacious parlors proved inadequate to contain all the friends. At about nine o'clock the bride and groom made their entrance. Here many of our readers may expect a general description of the appearance and dress of the happy young couple but we will have to disappoint them as our descriptive faculty in unequal to the emergency, but suffice it to say that they were handsomely and tastefully attired in the most appropriate nuptial paraphernalia. As they made their appearance Prof. W. D. Benner played a grand Wedding march, composed expressly for the occasion; the piece was rendered in a masterly manner and demonstrated that the Professor was in deed skilled in his profession. At the close of the Wedding March Rev. C. Haddaeus, Pastor of the German Independent Protestant Church, of Columbus, came forward and officiated in the marriage ceremony according to the custom of that denomination. The marriage rites of the German Protestants, always beautiful and impressive were made doubly interesting by being given first given in German and then repeated in English, at conclusion of which friends came forward with their greetings and presents. Some of the presents were very valuable, but we have not space to enumerate them.
Shortly after this supper was announced. The dining room tables groaned with all the luxuries that money could buy or heart could wish. The tables were capable of accommodating forty persons at a time and the feasting was kept up until after midnight. The tempting luxuries so bountifully provided, looked so magnificent that it seemed a sin to eat them. The cakes were trimmed and frosted in the most beautiful and artistic styles by Professor Klieder, the foreman of John Cull's Star Bakery. The admirable ice cream was also made by Cull's foreman. Many of the rich delicacies were likewise made by George Schweinfurth. Each and every article provided for the marriage feast gave evidence of having been prepared by an accomplished cook. And the manner in which the abundance of rare dainties were devoured was sufficient evidence of due appreciation of their merits. After the numerous guests had satisfied their appetites they were invited up stairs to enjoy tripudiary exercises which were participated in by numerous lovers of that exhilarating amusement, after which the newly married couple bade adieu to their friends and took the 3:38 train for Cleveland. The event will ever be remembered by all, as one of Marion's most enjoyable occasions. We join the friends of the young couple in wishing them abundant happiness and prosperity through life.

A more joyous occasion than that of the celebration of the nuptials of Mr. Joseph Schneider and Miss Nettie Diebold Wednesday night could not have been imagined and a prettier home wedding could not have been arranged.
The ceremony was performed at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Diebold, on south State street at 8 o'clock. At that hour the comfortable and pleasant interior on the Diebold home was well filled with guests to witness the solemnization of the wedding service of the German Protestant Evangelical church. In a nook or corner of the parlor was arranged a bank of palms and hydrangeas, while the remaining decorations were of white similax in every compartment of the house. Just in front of the floral bank was spread a rug of bridal white and here the wedding parties took their places.
The wedding march was played by Master Clifford Fies, a nephew of the bride while Master Arthur Ballantine bore the basket of silver which contained the wedding ring and little Miss Olivene Fies carried the bride's flowers. The bride appeared beautiful in a robe of white albatross trimmed with lace. With slow and measured step the party proceeded until they had formed for the service when Rev. Bischop, pastor of the German Protestant Evangelical church pronounced the ceremony that made them one and then friends proceeded to offer congratulations.
After an hour had been spent in congratulating Mr. and Mrs. Schneider and viewing the large number of costly presents, the guests were all seated to a delightful wedding feast spread through the house and the brilliantly lighted lawn.
Of the bridal couple little need be said. They are both well known here. Miss Diebold has spent her life in Marion and has won innumerable friends who will join in wishing her the happiest of life's gifts. Mr. Schneider was for a long time connected with the furniture and undertaking establishment of ?rame & Belcher, but at present is employed by the American Express company, with headquarters at Canton, Ohio. He too has a wide circle of acquaintances to join with those of the bride in well wishes.
Mr. and Mrs. Schneider will remain here for a few days after which they will go to Canton, where they will make their future home.

WILLIAM R. DIEBOLD DIES IN
CALIFORNIA
Death is the Result of a Lingering Illness
LEAVES A WIDOW AND ONE DAUGHTER
Mr. Diebold Is a Veteran of the Spanish-American War and Sees Hard Service in the
Philippine Islands ---- Three Sisters and Three Brothers Living --- The Funeral
Word was received here, Tuesday, announcing the death of William R. Diebold, which
occurred at his home in Los Angeles, California, Monday evening at 5 o'clock. Death was
due to tuberculosis, but not until lately did the victim show signs of the disease, which
he contracted while a member of A Company, of the Nebraska volunteers, with which company
he enlisted and fought in the Spanish-American War. His company was one of the first in
the conflict and was stationed in the Philippine Islands.
The deceased was born and raised in this city and is very well known here. When he felt
the effects of illness about nine years ago, he moved to California, going into the
grocery business at the place a short time later. For a time, his condition was bettered,
but the disease had gained too firm a hold on him and death conquered. Mr. Diebold would
have been thirty-five years of age next December.
The deceased is survived by a widow and one daughter, aged seven years.
Three sisters and three brothers also survive. They are Mrs. William Ballentine, Mrs.
Joseph Schneider and Charles Diebold, of this city; Mrs. Louis Fies, of Portland, Oregon;
Fred Diebold, of Shelton, Cuba and Jacob Diebold of Alaska. As no word has been received
regarding the arrangements for the funeral, it is thought probable that the remains will
be buried in Los. Angeles.
